Ashtanga teacher Tim Miller often begins his classes by chanting yoga sutras in Sanskrit and ends them by reading poetry while the class rests in Savasana (Corpse Pose). He frequently treats his students to selections from Jonathan Star’s Rumi: In the Arms of the Beloved. Miller’s picks include T.K.V. Desikachar’s Health, Healing and Beyond: Yoga and the Living Tradition of Krishnamacharya, the story of the influential Indian master who taught many of the world’s most renowned living yoga teachers. For morning illumination, he’s reads Saint Germain on Alchemy, and “for fun” he picks up Tom Robbins’ latest novel, Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates. This popular instructor, one of the first to bring Ashtanga Yoga to the United States, is particularly entranced by ancient Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, which he rereads about once a year. This comes as no surprise to his faithful students, who occasionally sit for long periods of time with their legs in the splits while their teacher launches into the long and rambling myth of the pose’s namesake, the monkey god Hanuman.
