Patanjali never promoted the idea of one step after another but on the contrary the simultaneous development of all 8 limbs. Samadhi is possible right here and now and through Samadhi we strengthen the other 7 limbs.
Otherwise one would not be doing asanas before ahimsa, satya, etc. - which makes no sense at all.
Besides the emptying of the mind & becoming unified with an object, much of these limb descriptions actually are in line with the Bible.... the union with the object, however, is already fully accomplished through the belief in Christ. The rest of all these limbs, to me, just are a moment by moment experience of the lavishing Love of the Father/Big Papa ;) We get to enjoy His peace, presence, favor, love.... just bc He desires to lavish His love on His children. I wrote a paper in order to graduate from yoga training, and the instructor crossed out "meditation" from my definition of Dhyana and substituted "contemplation." I was always confused by that but, thanks to this article, now see the light. :-)
couldn't read about dharana or dhyana because of badly coded advertisements overlapping the article. i'm really sure that a saturn astra will help me find inner peace though.....*ahem*
