Thanks for mentioning the importance of letting the top hip move toward the floor, if necessary. I have experienced compression in the SI joint from trying to face it forward, as if between 2 panes of glass, as it was formerly taught. Judith Lasater wrote extensively on this subject some years ago.

Actually, I find it a LOT easier to have beginners (and I prefer it myself) start from Extended Side Angle with elbow lightly on the bent knee, then simply straighten the bent leg and reposition arms, perhaps step back foot in slightly if necessary. Seems like far less a strain than coming into it from this "standard" upright stance because --- you're already down there :o) Then, kick it up a notch by raising that lower arm straight out in front with palm up - mamma mia core central!
