How does yoga help you lose weight and tone? Do you get any benefits like weight or size?

anonymous

I just turned 40 and started yoga for the first time. I'm also 100 pounds over weight. I do what I can do I love it. I do break a sweat but every week I challenge my body and am seeing results. Good luck to all considering this exercise.

no woman should EVER let weight stop them from doing anything! I suffer from agoraphobia and heavy anxiety - - I avoided yoga because I thought I'd have to pay to go to a large class with people so much more talented than me. But with resources like this and YouTube, I was able to start in the comfort of my tiny apartment. There is NOTHING stopping you from doing anything you want to but yourself!

à happy to journey to all women out there.

3 weeks ago I attended my first yoga class in my life. I'm 30 and about 40 pounds over weight. I've done yoga before on the wii fit and really liked it. I was unable to attend the weekly Tuesday night class for 2 weeks after my first class. However, since I have been at the gym 4-5x a week I noticed a big difference in holding my poses, not leaving the class drenched in my sweat and all the stress in my body was gone when I left my 2nd class. Needless to say, I will be doing Yoga untill I take my last breath.

Im the strong girl, built to power lift. I've always wanted to do yoga, I have this thought that it will clam my mind and open me up to a whole other side of being physical aware. down side there are no classes around where I live. I want to know if theres a video for brand new begginers that is recomened?

I too am overweight. I've recently been practicing Yin Yoga 2-3 times/week. I do it before I go to bed. It's amazing how much it helps me sleep. I'm looking forward to noticing the other benefits.

How funny for me to read this. I'm 49 and 100 pounds overweight and put off trying yoga for ages. I started practicing 6 months ago, at times deeply embarrased at how little I could actually do, but determined to give this a solid effort. After about 4 months, I noticed subtle differences in my strength on the mat and after 6, a huge leap into many intermediate poses. I just wish I had been more yogi-ish when I did my first headstand! But thanks to a great instructor who consistently modified poses for me and encouraged me to drop the ego, I'm truly enjoying the ongoing conversation with my body and the continuing journey. I've lost 30 pounds in 6 months and i give yoga so much credit for that, but more credit for a calmer mind and a more open spirit.

I think it is hilarious that I just found this post. I am currently and constistently the fat girl in class. But the way I feel when I leave class is unbelievable. I am hooked. I DEFINITELY make better food choices through the rest of the day as it just feels right. The breathing and commincating you do with your body during yoga, puts you more in tune with yourself and your health.

Yam, the key is finding the right instructor. I too am overweight and thought I might be too self conscious. I attended one class and am hooked. There are two instructors where I attend and they are wonderful! I never worry about being over weight and they constantly emphasize that you do a pose where you are that day. One day you may be able to do something and perhaps the very next day you may not, but they are clear that's fine. It's were you are at that day and time. Everyone in the class is focused with their poses, they have no time nor interest on me. I believe people that practice yoga are truly trying to reap the benefits and are not there to judge others. Give a try sooner rather than later. Good luck!
