Reflect a Good Mood with Good Posture

As a culture, we tend to slump our upper bodies forward, protecting the area around our heart. Specialists claim that this posture is our way of guarding ourselves emotionally—and they link it to larger health issues, including backache and disease.

Luckily, yoga can help us open the heart—a central aspect of practice. Physically, this involves getting out of our typical round-shouldered slump. The change requires us to strengthen our back muscles and remember to sit, stand, and move with good alignment. Emotionally, this involves letting go of fear and embracing love.

Since our posture reflects our emotions, the way we hold our bodies affects the way we feel, and vice versa. People who carry themselves with good alignment seem confident and graceful, while those whose posture reflects a physical slump appear to be in a mental slump as well. Learning to stand and sit with an open heart helps us feel joyous and teaches us to lead with our heart in daily life. Most important, it ensures a healthy body from the inside out.
