Sri K. Pattabhi Jois' Mysore-style Ashtanga Yoga with Lori Brungard, KPJAYI Authorized Level II, and Augustine Kim. Monday-Friday at 7-11am. Sundays 9-11am. Sunday class only is by donation. First week of classes for new local students: $25. All levels welcome; please call or e-mail before first class.

Pattabhi Jois’ method firmly establishes the strong physical and mental health necessary for sadhana (spiritual practice) through an elegantly designed sequence of breath-initiated postures. There is a quiet, meditative serenity in the practice room that encourages this inner reflection.

In the Mysore-style method, students are taught individually in a group setting. As students learn and internalize the sequence, mastering challenges, they are taught new postures. The teacher's nurturing support complements the student's deepening self-awareness and independence. This support comes from observing the student's breathing and comfort level to ascertain the appropriate pace of progress, and sensitive hands-on adjustments remove previous limitations imposed by the mind. Regular, consistent practice is essential, yet the potency of the system can be felt in a single practice.

Although the sequence is universal, the way it is approached may vary according to specific needs. This creates the opportunity for a tailored practice typically offered through private lessons, with the benefit of the energy, community and shared cost of a group class.

A former professional modern dancer, Lori Brungard learned a deep awareness of human anatomy. Her work as a Thai Yoga therapist has added an energetic component to this understanding. Her skills as a teacher lie both in her sensitive hands-on adjustments as well as her ability to see underlying causes of challenges and thus how to create change.

Augustine Kim has dedicated himself to the practice of Ashtanga yoga for the past eight years, and is truly grateful for the opportunity to share the profound beauty of this path with others. He started Mysore practice in 2004 with Rolf Naujokat in Thailand. Most recently, he apprenticed under and assisted Dr. John Campbell. He holds an engineering degree from MIT.
