Join us in the Fall for our Ashtanga/vinyasa krama yoga teacher training at the Blue Ridge School of Massage & Yoga. Our 200-hour, nine-month certification program starts in November; classes meet one weekend a month with two week-long retreats.

What is Ashtanga Yoga?

Ashtanga is a vinyasa-based yoga which combines a flowing sequence of postures with breath, movement and bhandas. The set sequence of postures is designed to structurally realign, heal and create balance within the body, mind and heart.

The practice develops strength and flexibility. The flowing nature of the vinyasa practice produces a cleansing internal heat and endurance. As strength, flexibility and endurance develop there is a natural turning of the mind inward following the sound of the breath. Focus, concentration and mindfulness develop naturally. Meditation grows out of this fertile ground.

Yoga is a transformational process that requires time, energy, effort and commitment in order to achieve its fullest potential. It uncovers and clears away all that keeps us from knowing the Divine and Eternal One in our hearts. Then we must learn how to live from that knowing.

We will discuss five key practices that when taken as a whole illuminate our path home to our common heart. Therefore, students should be available to commit the time necessary to develop a personal practice.

This traditional method is based on the teachings of Master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India and Dee Silvers of Ardmore, Pennsylvania.
