Supatha Yoga is a fresh and inspired practice created by Sri Lakshmi Devi's extensive background and training. A Brooklyn native, Lakshmi describes her approach to yoga as "a uniquely structured practice, well-rounded with a touch of edginess to keep it grounded in reality." Her personal history through the path of health and healing evokes in her the ability to encourage her students, to hold them to their commitments to themselves with compassion, nonjudgment and an open heart.
Lakshmi's goal is to "provide a joyful, nurturing, noncompetitive place for my students to embrace their practice, embrace themselves, gain vitality, be flexible and maybe laugh a little along the way. I'm here to teach, to share, to nurture, to help heal and help actualize in my students their own process and paths to themselves. I am just the messenger, humbled by my teachers and my opportunity to share this practice. My intention is to inspire, to help you gain confidence in yourself and your abilities while challenging the boundaries of your strength."
Our studio is designed to provide the full spectrum of health, fitness and opportunities for growth. A variety of drop-in classes are offered weekly as well as monthly workshops and private/individual instruction. The Supatha Method quarter-series Sun flow is a harmonious blend of 13 postures, arranged in four diverse quarters, fueled by conscious breathing, mindful transitioning and a structured flow. Offered at various levels and sequencing, this practice can be accessible to every body, regardless of age, size, shape, fitness level or physical ability.
Supatha's new healing cooperative opens on October 13, 2012. It was born of the desire to provide teachers and students with the opportunity to practice, play and learn about various styles of healing including yoga, the Five Tibetan Rites, qi gong, dance, chakra balancing, breathwork, chanting to find your voice, and so much more.
Supatha is a cooperative studio committed to serving our local community and surrounding areas. If you are a healing practitioner and need a space to hold your weekly classes, workshops, gatherings or events, call Lakshmi today to inquire about membership in one of our beautifully restored, tranquil and inviting spaces.
The Supatha Yoga Method is rooted in the authentic yogic philosophy Pratipaksha Bhavanam (the art of substituting a negative thought with a positive thought). Lakshmi seeks to strengthen and grow the mind and body through compassion, positive reflection and a structured, mindful practice. "Health, healing and personal development start to happen when we change our thought patterns to reflect our best aspirations." Enveloped within this approach lies the mantra, "As we think, so shall we become."
Lakshmi's dedication to her practice manifests in over 8000 hours of study with 33+ years of hands-on practice and over 27 years of teaching experience in the fields of yoga and fitness. A senior member of the International Yoga Association and a Yoga Alliance-registered experienced yoga therapist (E-RYT), Lakshmi is well-versed in a variety of healing modalities and holds several certifications, including two in functional anatomy of movement for injury and illness from Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She is also a certified fitness coach for the Arthritis Foundation.
Lakshmi's initial yoga training was under the skillful guidance of Sri Swami Satchidananda, founder of Integral Yoga, in Coimbatore, India, as well as in various institutes here in the states. Her authentic eastern foundation of yoga is based on her studies in Sivananda, Iyengar, vinyasa, Anusara and Viniyoga methodology. In 1991 Lakshmi embarked on her lifelong path of lovingkindness with his Holiness the fourteenth Dali Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. A licensed interfaith minister, Reiki master and spiritual coach , Lakshmi continually deepens her knowledge in the various fields of yoga, anatomy, physical fitness, spiritual practice and energy healing, striving towards her PhD in exercise physiology—and yet still finds time to ride her motorcycle!
