At the East West Sanskrit Institute Shanta and Indira Bulkin offer Sanskrit classes, workshops and retreats with an emphasis on experiencing the language as a tool for meditation. They take joy in creating a relaxed learning environment for students of all ages and backgrounds. Whether students want to learn to pronounce asana names correctly, chant verses with the proper rhythm, or dive into grammar, they are happy to share any part of the language. They are often privileged to be joined by Dr. Ram Karan Sharma, one of the world's greatest Sanskritists, who provides insight into a deeper realm of texts.

The Sanskrit language has existed for millennia as an oral tradition. Much of the literature was composed in verse or sutra form to facilitate memorization and transmittal. Sanskrit verses are primarily chanted, not spoken. Sanskrit has a very rich tradition of different meters encompassing a marvelous variety of tunes.

Shanta and Indira's Guru, Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati, taught nouns and verbs, as well as verses, using the powerful medium of chanting. At the East West Sanskrit Institute, Indira and Shanta Bulkin maintain this tradition of teaching with chanting.

They use color-coded charts and handouts to facilitate understanding of the elements of grammar. They encourage thinking in Sanskrit early on by making basic sentences relevant to daily life and by introducing students early to verses which provide a context for the material that is presented.
