What is ISHTA?

ISHTA has a twofold meaning. It is an acronym, which stands for the Integrated Science of Hatha, Tantra, and Ayurveda: a blend of the physical practice, subtle-energetic techniques, and healing methods that culminate in a balanced state of vitality and well being. Ishta is also a Sanskrit word that draws from the classical text of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, meaning 'that which resonates with the individual spirit.' As such, ISHTA recognizes the inherent perfection in each individual and aspires to enhance that through the practice.

The ISHTA Style

ISHTA Yoga was founded by South African Tantric yoga master Alan Finger, whose teachings have inspired people from all over the globe for over 50 years. Our studios, located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and in the Union Square area, are home to a wide range of students from all walks of life that are looking for a practice that is authentic and accessible. At ISHTA, we take a non-dogmatic approach to the science of yoga and encourage our students to turn inward to tap their own potential rather than search outside themselves for it. Our system is breath-based, alignment-oriented, and integrates the ancient techniques of kriya, pranayama and meditation to affect all layers of one's being. Whether you are looking for a stronger, more vigorous practice or a cooler, gentler one, there is always an option for the ISHTA practitioner. Plus, our highly skilled teachers are trained to teach to the individual so personal attention is a given. Our classes blend the ageless wisdom of yogic philosophy with modern accessibility through humor, insight, and often music. Offering 200- and 300-hour Yoga Alliance teacher trainings, workshops with master teachers, retreats, and privates, ISHTA Yoga is more than just a yoga system--it is a community and a lineage.
