The company I work for is asking us to sign a non-compete after telling us if we purchased our own insurance we would be exempt. Morally, I do not feel right doing this because I am a private contractor and only teach 2 hours a week for this particular company. They have not compensated me for what they are asking and do not reimburse us well for our time. I enjoy the clientel--that is why I have stayed there. My clarification question is...if they told me to purchase my own insurance so I would not have to sign this non-compete; and now they are asking me to sign, but said they would put a clause that I could work elsewhere if I quit/fired....? It goes back to promises and pie crusts were meant to be broken...I am not exactly trusting their intentions; do I have to sign?

Lyndsay Kane

I greatly appreciate this article series on Teacher contracts. I am curious, as a newly certified instructor, what type of contractual agreement ought to be made with private clientel where there is no studio involvement and classes are often held in the privacy of the students home. What sort of recommendations do you make to protecting both the teacher and the student in this type of arrangement?
