Inversions During Menstruation

When I first began doing yoga in my twenties, my teacher would advise against women doing an inverted series while they were menstruating. Since I rarely saw any women opting out of doing the inverted postures, I did them regardless of where I was in my cycle. I liked the effect of the postures, didn't want to share with the class where I was in my cycle, and never noticed any effects, negative or positive, from doing inversions while menstruating. Why are inversions said to be contraindicated during menstruation? I am reluctant to include inversions in the yoga classes I teach and would love input.

Read John Friend's response:

Dear Anonymous,

Inversions have strong effects on the pranic flow in the body. After teaching yoga to thousands of women over the last 28 years, I have gathered numerous testimonials from those whose cycles were negatively affected after practicing inversions while menstruating. Menstrual periods can become weaker or irregular, or they may immediately stop, for months after inverting for a few minutes during menstruation. The effect on the menstrual cycle is directly related to the duration of the inversion. The effect increases significantly as the woman remains inverted for more than five minutes.

Although it is a minority of women who experience negative effects from inversions during menstruation, I think that it is better to be consistently safe than sorry. So I do not think that it is a good idea to invert while menstruating.

Personally, I believe that this negative effect on menstruation is almost entirely a prana-related phenomenon of inversions. The most important days to avoid inversions during menstruation are during the first two or three days of heaviest flow. Apana vayu is the downward-flowing region of prana in the pelvic area that helps in the elimination of waste. Inversions can have a strong effect on apana vayu, which can cause the flow of waste out of the body to be disturbed.

Just as I have been told by several women over the years that their periods were disrupted from practicing inversions while menstruating, I have also had success with initiating menstruation in women suffering from amenorrhea by having them regularly practice inversions. So women should carefully consider the pranic effects of inversions.

What about endometriosis??

In my experience it is a matter of degree, as to how much apana imbalance and how much physical. In the beginning of my practice I went to an all weekend workshop on Inversions - I'd paid for it so I did it all anyway. My period stopped for a week and then returned. Not serious harm, but doing that regularly would cause injury. Since then I don't stay up very long during menstruation, I'll demonstrate postures but won't stay in them. And that's what I recommend to my students.

Thank you John, for this explanation of the pranic effects of inversion. As your reader stated, I am one also who has never noted any positive nor negative effects from inverting during menses. Some of my students have expressed confusion that the physical flow of the blood (menses) would not resume after inversion, and I have not agreed that this should be the case, especially if a tampon is in place as it has a mild wicking effect away from the cervical os. Again, these are 5' or less amounts of time in inversions. I think the other anatomical point we should address with inversions is that as the uterus is suspended upside down and hangs by the ovarian ligaments, it is possible for the ovarian arteries to be compromised and have reduced blood flow (not the mense blood flow) thereby decreasing the flow and oxygenation to the uterus. Again, for short periods of time, this is probably benign in most instances. I like to quiz woman as to whether they avoid carnival rides during their menses, where inversions are common circumstance, and has never been identified as a problem, or in the every day lives of female circus performers. As with all asana, one must exercise caution with regard to how their body responds in any given pose, inversion or not. And, in terms of yogic tradition, and pranic flow, one must decide whether to embrace tradition or intuition. Thank you for addressing this one, as it has always been an interesting one to open to discussion. I'm still considering a bumper sticker which says..."Honk if you're inverting"....
