Yoga Diary is a first-person 250-word story that appears in our front-of-the-book Om section. A Yoga Diary tells about a pivotal moment in the writer's yoga experience. If you would like to share your transformational story and submit a Yoga Diary for our consideration, please e-mail your 250-word submission (pasted into the message body) to diary@yogajournal.com. Specify Yoga Diary in the subject line. If chosen, we'll require a photograph of you to run with the story.
Yoga Journal covers the practice and philosophy of yoga. We welcome professional queries for the follow departments:
- Om. This front-of-the-book section covers myriad aspects of the yoga lifestyle. These short (150- to 400-word) reported pieces are largely freelance written. This department includes Yoga Diary, a 250-word story about a pivotal moment in your yoga practice. (Read more about Yoga Diary above.)
- Eating Wisely. A popular, 1,400-word department about relationship to food. Most stories focus on vegetarian and whole-foods cooking, nutritional healing, and contemplative pieces about the relationship between yoga and food.
- Well Being. This 1,200-word department presents reported pieces about the integration of a regular yoga practice and health.
E-mail a well-written query to queries@yogajournal.com.
Please note: While we review all queries submitted, we regretfully cannot respond to each one. If we are interested in your story idea, an editor will contact you within six weeks. Please do not call or send follow-up emails to queries sent.
We encourage you to read several issues of Yoga Journal carefully before submitting a query. Please pitch your article idea to the appropriate department and indicate the projected word count, and what sources you'd use. If you're pitching a seasonal story, keep in mind that we assign six months ahead, so a New Year's story for a January issue would be assigned in June. In your query letter, please indicate your writing credentials. If we are interested in your idea, we will require writing samples. Please note that we do not accept unsolicited manuscripts for any departments except Yoga Diary. We consider everything except a contracted assignment to be submitted on a speculative basis.
Payment for all stories varies, depending on length, depth of research, etc. We pay within 90 days of final story acceptance.
