Practice Patience

The goal of yoga is enlightenment . That's it. Yoga was originally developed to lead the practitioner to freedom from suffering ... (continued)

When I started yoga 2 yrs ago I quickly realized the fact contained in this article- that a large body has different points of reference than a thin or regular person! Frustration can discourage larger people. If you teach, learn something about adaptations for larger students, help us to not give up! (And remind us to breathe!)

A factual problem with the headline in this article -- diets don't mostly fail; they always fail. More power to yoga for encouraging body awareness and acceptance, then.

I'm an avid yogi and I also suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome a few years when I was in my early 30s. It lasted 2 years more or less. Recently, (after 3 years of feeling myself) old haunting symptoms have popped up once every few months. I'm continuing with my yoga routines, eating healthy and trying very hard to remain positive and stress-free. I was wondering if anyone else has had reoccurring bouts of CFS too?

How truly inspiring and touching. It's wonderful to hear how yoga can heal us in so many ways. It has and continues for me.

As a larger gal I am ofter pleasantly surprised at all the moves I can do. I try it all and modify what I need to. I love the way yoga makes my body feel.

What a surprise when one of my students told me that this article (11 years old) is on the website now!
FYI - I have now taught well over 10,000 classes to students with size, health, and weight challenges, and my Center, A Gentle Way Yoga and Joyful Movement Center in San Diego, specializes in certifying teachers in modified and plus size yoga. Gentle Yoga is changing hundreds or peoples lives, and body images, and it has changed my life in ways I never imaged. Over the years I have seen Yoga Journal slowly and gradually improve to make yoga articles more size friendly, but you are right, we are barely opening the door to the needs of the larger body. It will be up to us to lead the way. Health and happiness come in all sizes, and remember- the most importants asanas are savasana and meditation :)

One of the studios that we visited on our 100 Studios in 100 Days tour was the Yoga Project in the Sellwood neighborhood of Portland. Vilma conducts a "Yoga for the Larger Women" class. It's standing room only and these women are dedicated to the practice that Vilma designed with them in mind... just thought you would like to know.

Thank you Sue for sharing. This is so true.
Amen and AMEN !!!!!!!
