Breathe Better

If you dread the onset of allergy season, an ancient Indian remedy stands ready to help.

By Karen Solomon

If you've found winter colds hard to shake and dread the onset of allergy season, an ancient Indian remedy stands ready to help. It's the neti pot, an Ayurvedic nasal irrigation tool that's been used for thousands of years. Enthusiasts say that with regular use, their nasal passages and ears feel clearer, and they snore less and sleep better. It's well worth learning the rather awkward protocol: dissolving one-quarter teaspoon of finely ground noniodized salt into eight ounces of warm water, then leaning over a sink and pouring the mixture up one nostril and out the other.

The neti pot got a boost from modern researchers in recent University of Wisconsin studies showing that nasal irrigation helps lessen symptoms for patients with sinusitis. And some practitioners who promote the neti, like DeAnna Batdorff of the dhyana Center in Sebastopol, California, report that it’s one of their most popular items. "All 10 practitioners here use neti pots," she says. "It’s how we start every day."

Saphira

When I'm really congested, I add 1/2 a tsp of baking soda into the water and that helps break up the really tough mucus.

Adjust his diet to avoid all dairy products. I resisted this suggestion for 10 years! when I finally gave into it, I was breathing freely within 24 hrs! After 48 hrs, the "stuffy, cotton-packed" feeling in my sinuses was gone! I have not used dairy (cow) products for 8 years now, & don't regret it one bit. Breathing feels great! And my neti pot really works when I have seasonal allergies, or an actual cold. at least now, I can tell the difference.

Good luck!

my son and neti pot

I talked my son into purchasing a neti and he is so congested that he can't get the water to go through the nostrols. Are there some folks that this just does not help? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
