Dr. Loren Fishman offers a lot of valuable information on this topic in his book "Yoga for Osteoporosis" .
i am grateful for the holistic advice and information in this excellent article. thanks!
Thank you for highlighting and recommending simple strategies we can do to reduce effects of this potential (physical) crippling illness...Very informative.
Thank you for the poses for people with osteoporosis! Everyone has info on how to try to prevent the disease, and at 37 years old, I never thought that I would be diagnosed with severe bone loss. I miss my practise and look forward to incorporating yoga back into my daily routine.
I am diagnosed with osteoporosis of my spine and osteopoenia of my hips. I am not menstruating, and am an athletic female. I am taking calcium phos. and women's ambrosia through a holistic specialist. I am a runner, and suffered stress fractures. How do I go about improving my estrogen other than eating well, healthfully and often. I don't want to go on drugs! Thanks for any advice.
Since going to an Ayurvedic retreat in which Iyengar yoga played a large part of the treatment I have overcome osteoporosis (I was diagnosed at 44 with the condition -25% bone mass) and in a year increased mass by 15%. I won't have another scan until next year but with daily practice (including 3 minutes full arm balance; 5 minutes headstand and 15 minutes shoulderstand) I expect to have conquored it completely. Thanks to Iyengar Yoga and a lower protein diet. Oh and by the way I am now a yoga teacher too. To pass on what I learned!
Lorena - Yes forward bends and twists are often contraindicated with Osteoporosis. You can view a comprehensive resource guide to Yoga and Osteoporosis on my site at: http://www.yogabasics.com/learn/osteoporosis.html
I been reading that some yoga poses that require foward bends might be dangerous for people with osteoporosis because of a potenial fractures on the spine vertebrae
Could you give more information on this
I have crohns disease, and recently had my first bone density screening. I am only 33 and show signs of early osteoporosis since my small intestine doesn't allow me to recieve all the benefits of the food I eat.
This article is so thorough and helpful. I have already been doing yoga regularly for 10 years, thank goodness! But, your article pinpoints some other things I am grateful to be able to try.
