I have found that externallly rotating my hands, turning my palms up, in most poses such as Warrior I and chair pose alleviates all of my shoulder discomfort.

Amazing article. I bought 2 yoga dvds the other day and the plan is to start tomorrow. I thought I would have a little look to see how it is and came across this article. I have suffered for 3 years due to injuries to my rotator cuffs and only recently bgan the right treatment method for it. Now your article has made me much more keen on yoga as a whole I really hope I can enjoy it as I think it could really help me to regain the strengh I need as I am only 20 and don't want to suffer all my life. Thank-you for a possibly life changing article :-)

Congratulations on a wonderful article Julie. I deveolped impingement syndrome in both shoulders, prior to which I used to swim 4 miles three times per week. After doing the military press with weights one time I injured my rotator cuffs and had pain for one year! After seeing three orthopedic Surgeon who weren't able to help me, I read your article which was quite illuminating. It gave me the strength to attack this problem and made me think about the pathophysiology of impingement syndrome. Since then I have developed a three phase attack on impingement and in one week I am 30% better. One of those phases is improvement in my posture and is connected to Yoga as you have suggested.

I owe my happy shoulders and my return to the pool to you Julie. Thank you kindly. David Newman MD

Wonderful article that I wish I had read much sooner! However, the story seems incomplete without the benefit of the illustrations accompanying the story.
