This article about family and holidays helped me so much, especially with regards to my workplace, where I tend to be quite judgemental. Learning and practicing detachment allowed me to gain perspective and so begin to reduce the high levels of stress due to expectations and disappointments in that arena.
Good stuff in here that we could all do well to remember.
I understand nonattachment and I try to practice this everyday, everywhere. But...there is always a but, I have this problem with my sister-in-law and my mother-in-law. Their body odor is very offensive. The two of them have a bladder control problem, and do not shower every day. When they come for dinner, we have to open the doors and windows to air out the house due to their body odor. We live in the same house; they in the basement apt. and my husband and 4 children on the main floor. The bad smell that eminates up to the main floor from their living quarters is just as bad. How can I not judge them when they know they are offensive and take offence to us telling them so. Do I not have a right to say, "You smell bad',? A little advice on this will be greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays.
This was really important to read today. I had my family gathering yesterday, full of tension with my father. Although i tried not to react to him, today i woke up feeling drained, with no energy whatsoever. Now i understood i asked too much of myself and tried to behave like the good daughter for his approval and forgetting myself. Thank you for this great article. Big kiss
