If you eat fish you are a pescetarian not a vegetarian. vegetarians don't eat animals, if you eat a dead animal you are no longer a vegetarian.

Godfrey Lewis

I personally refuse to be an apologist for violence in the name of what best for my body.
Yes, every body their unique requirement for food, but food is the operative word. I would argue that other living creatures are not food for human beings.

Sarah

"I don't eat meat but I enjoy seafood. Is it OK to eat seafood 2 to 3 times a week and still be considered a vegetarian?"
No.The vegetarian society defines a vegetarian as "Someone who lives on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits with, or without, the use of dairy products and eggs. A vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish* or by-products of slaughter."

"Plants are living entities too!"
Yes, but it's a different kind of life. They are not sentinent as animals are.

Rusty Ferrin

Bhagavad-Giita in 17 chapter has 3 slokas dedicated to food. Food is liked by 3 types of jiva, satvic, rajasic, rajasic.

Nick Wright

I tried the vegetarianism thing, and it didn't really work for me. But meat is no longer the main part of my meals, more of a condiment.

Also, I am sincerely thrilled to find another, Christine, who shares my thoughts regarding those who say they are vegetarian because they cannot bring themselves to take the life of another being.

Plants are living entities too!

Deborah Wickham

It becomes more apparent that the act of meat eating is not only unethical toward the animal but also the sustainability of human life through the effects of deforestation and methane gases as a result of the insatiable desire for meat. It is not our heritage to eat meat on a regular basis, so those who claim this are deluding themselves. Those who claim they need meat to be 'strong' have obviously never seen the awe-inspiring strength of an advanced yogi or yogini!
Namaste.

Hi, I have been a vegetarian for over 12 years and I am now a certified yoga teacher. I was recently reading a bio on a promient yogi and he said "when you kill an animal you take its life" When you eat a plant or a fruit it has seeds that are planted to renew life" Being a vegetarian is not only life changing but being mindfull of our role as stewards of this plant. Namaste

I agree with Christine, and also the part of the article that says you should let your "body guide you rather than intellectual dogma." Sometimes I enjoy eating an all vegetarian (even vegan) diet for a week or 2 and sometimes I feel a need to eat meat and fish. I prefer to listen to my body and try to give it what it needs - I've always felt a flexible and open minded attitude toward all kinds of styles of healthy eating tends to be best for the individual.
