Writer Jean Weiss finds a relaxing weekend of yoga with her teenage daughter and friend at Devil's Thumb Ranch, Colorado.
Smooth and expansive fields of white delight my eyes as I pull up to Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa in Tabernash, Colorado, with my 12-year-old daughter and her close friend. The elegant main building sits amidst mountain meadows, groomed for both skate and classic cross-country skiing. A young bellhop greets us, eager to help us unload and find our room. I quickly forget about our backseat carsickness mishap up windy Berthoud Pass as I settle in to the weekend getaway I’d carved out for yoga and cross-country skiing.
We unpack as the sun sets, then walk the grounds, following the steam to the outdoor pool and hot tub. Then we explore a meandering sidewalk that ends at Ranch Creek Spa, a rustic log building. We circle back for dinner followed by s’mores by the outdoor fire before hightailing it to our comfortable beds.
I have a yoga class first thing the next morning in a windowed room on the second floor of the spa. Our teacher, Nathana Janca, who completed her teacher training at the Sacha Dham Ashram’s Yoga Chakra India school, takes us through a well-sequenced vinyasa flow that somehow leaves me both relaxed and energized. Next up for me is rigorous skate skiing through flat, open meadows, rolling willow thickets, and an uphill through trees, while the girls take lessons in classic cross-country on the flats.
Afterward, they check out the game room at the lodge for bowling and foosball, and watch a movie in the hotel theater, while I treat myself to a chakra-balancing massage at the spa that leaves me feeling grounded and replenished. I join the girls for a farewell dinner—gourmet mac ’n cheese for them, the signature Devil’s Thumb Ranch Wagyu Burger for me—in the main restaurant, followed by a last walk beneath the winter moon.
