For Vyaas Houston, chanting Sanskrit is as much a part of yoga as asana or meditation, and his teaching techniques can have anyone reading and pronouncing Sanskrit in a weekend. Houston studied Sanskrit for many years with Ramamurti S. Mishra, then went on to get an M.A. in Sanskrit from Columbia University. In 1989 he founded the American Sanskrit Institute in Warwick, New York.
"Language is the medium through which human life continues to evolve," notes Houston. "The development of Sanskrit in ancient times represents a great surge toward enlightened consciousness. I see Sanskrit as a key to the grounding of the tradition of yoga in modern times. It's exciting to consider the awakening that's possible with the marriage of ancient linguistic science and digital technology."
