You can't live without your smartphone, but have you tried smart jewelry? Leaf Urban, the new product from wellness tech company Bellabeat, helps you predict your stress level and track your sleep, daily activity, menstrual cycle, and meditation practice, and look pretty doing it.

Leaf Urban, like all Bellabeat products, is inspired by nature -- hence the "leaf" design, which is bit more subtle with a more modern feel than the original Leaf Nature product. It comes in two colors, Silver ($119) and Rose Gold ($129), and can be worn as a necklace, bracelet, or clip (nobody will know that you're "wearing" tech). The new product is also water-resistant with a more sustainable bracelet. But the main update that's coming with the Leaf Urban is the new stress-predicting and management feature (which will also be available for the original Leaf Nature product). Along with the Leaf App, the Leaf tracks your lifestyle habits like sleep, activity level, your menstrual cycle, and your meditation practice, and uses this data to help you predict and prevent stress (because, let's face it ... if you slept five hours last night, have PMS, and didn't get any exercise or meditate, you're probably not going to be feeling your best).

Tracking Your Healthy Habits

To help combat and prevent stress, Leaf Urban features a meditation exercise from Olympian Lolo Jones; short exercises (2 and 10 minute) for inner peace, energy, deep sleep, confidence, focus, SOS, and menstrual discomfort; as well as breathing exercises for every level.

Leaf Urban also tracks your active time (the Leaf suggests 20 minutes each day, but you can set your own goals), and an "inactivity alert" will trigger vibration on your Leaf if you're not moving enough. On the flip side, the Leaf knows you should NOT be active during the night, and uses movement (or lack thereof) to track your sleep duration and quality. It also vibrates gently to wake you up in the morning, if desired.

The Leaf also tracks your period, fertile days, and ovulation for you if you're trying to get pregnant. Avoiding pregnancy? Leaf can also prompt you to take your oral contraception (the product is made by women for women, but anyone can use it).

We Tried It

Once you download the free Leaf App, Leaf Urban is easy to sync with your smartphone. It can be worn as statement jewelry or discreetly clipped into your clothing. After my first outing with the Leaf, on Thursday afternoon, it informed me that I had achieved 32 minutes of daily exercise, taken 3,976 steps, walked 1.68 miles, and burned 107 calories. ("You're doing great! my Leaf encouraged). The following morning, it correctly sensed that I woke up about 7:51 a.m. (the Leaf cheers you on to get at least seven hours of sleep). The Leaf also offers fun tips like "Did you know? Active lifestyle is the best detox." Who couldn't use a little more encouragement to move a little more, get more sleep, and meditate each day?

Leaf Urban will be available for pre-order by mid-August at www.bellabeat.com/urban. The stress-prediction feature was not available to test at press time, but will be available in late August.
