My Yoga Journal     August 3, 2004 — Issue 112
Your weekly dose of yoga tips, information, and advice.

Opening the Hips
Those of you who've come to yoga with a background in athletics may have already noticed this fact: while activities like running, cycling, and weight lifting undoubtedly make us strong, they can also make us tight, especially in the hips. This is so often the case that I can usually guess which postures will be challenging for new students once they clue me in on their athletic history.

Of course, athletes aren't the only groups of people who tend to have tighter hips. Men, older people, and people with injuries often find the hips to be a problem area. And there are probably few of us who haven't struggled with one hip opener or another.

The wonderful thing about yoga is that it's really not about comparing your body to some ideal measure or standard. Yogis working with tight hips aren't missing out on the benefits of their practice—they're just working with a different edge. If you're respecting where your body is and exploring a pose from there, you're getting just as much from your practice as the person whose hips open effortlessly on command. In fact, working with restrictions in the hips can be a great lesson in surrender, acceptance, and release.

This issue presents some information on the causes and effects of tight hips, as well as expert advice on practice strategies and some practical ways to safely open this critical zone.

Namaste,

Leila Easa
