My Yoga Journal     October 5, 2004 — Issue 121
Your weekly dose of yoga tips, information, and advice.

The Burden of Proof
I have a friend who has studied for years to become an acupuncturist. His program has required that he balance a full-time job, an active yoga practice, and a challenging course load every semester. After five years of making sacrifices, he is finally finished. But at the moment when he should be the happiest—looking forward to a new career ahead—he is instead filled with doubt.

It's not that he doesn't think acupuncture works. He's had direct experiences with it himself. It's simply that the scientific world of medical research is only beginning to focus on acupuncture. My friend wants to cite studies and statistics to his new patients. He wants to know, from a Western perspective, what the benefits of acupuncture really are.

Many of us have probably had the same experience with yoga. We know it works because we can feel it. But we'd like to understand more about how its claims measure up to scientific proof.

This issue collects some of the most interesting scientific findings from the past four years so you can explore the problem for yourself. Not all of our writers agree on the question, but all of them have something valuable to say.

Namaste,

Leila Easa

In This Issue:

Bakasana may be the most important of all arm balances, since understanding how to do it prepares you for most others. Although the pose may seem intimidating at first, it's accessible for many beginners. Here's how to take flight as your feet lift from the ground.
