Kundalini Rising
Recently I’ve heard of several people experiencing spontaneous kundalini awakenings. There seems to be a good deal of mystery, hearsay, and, in some cases, even fear surrounding this phenomenon.
What is kundalini? Kundalini is the power and essence of your consciousness. It’s the energy of infinite potential, coiled like a serpent and housed at the base of the spine. When the kundalini awakens, it moves up the spine, activating the chakras along the way.
So what’s the problem? When you’ve prepared the nervous system to contain the surge of energy through the use of asana and bandha, the awakening has the potential to be joyful and integrating. However, if the body is not prepared—or if you try to force the phenomenon—a sudden flood of energy can overstimulate the nerves and other cells of the brain to expand their activity beyond capacity, causing potential mental or emotional discomfort.
This week, explore the symbolic origins of kundalini. See what teachers and scholars have to say about the potential risks of an awakening. Prepare the body and raise the voltage of your nervous system with an energizing Kundalini Yoga sequence. Finally, if you have concerns about a personal experience, consult your yoga teacher.
Namaste,
Andrea Kowalski
