My Yoga Journal May 15, 2007 — Issue 257
Your weekly dose of yoga tips, information, and advice.
Swinging from the Hips
It’s easy to see the effects of your practice throughout all areas of your life on the macro level. You may be physically, mentally, and emotionally stronger. After all, yoga has been shown to improve sports performance in athletes.
But can it help you in picking up a new sport? I decided to investigate last week at the Grand Geneva conference by enrolling in the Yoga and Golf intensive, led by golf pro and Anusara teacher Bobby Lane.
It turns out that hip rotation, twists, and balance play a larger role in golf than I could have predicted. Lane’s ideal stance includes tilting forward from the hips, bending the knees, leaning back onto the heels, and drawing the arms into the body, then swinging with both a side rotation and side bend.
Between technique and course etiquette, there was a lot to remember. I managed to make contact with the ball in about one out of every three attempts. Luckily, my golf partner was a cheeky yogini from Chicago who kept things in perspective with a healthy dose of irreverence.
This week, find out exactly how yoga can improve your golf game. Find more success by staying present on the fairway and releasing your expectations. Practice targeted asanas such as Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (One-Legged King Pigeon Pose) to keep your hips in the game, or practice an entire sequence created specifically for golfers. Or for more personal instruction, sign up for the intensive at the 2008 YJ South Florida conference. Fore!
Namaste,
Andrea Kowalski

It's All in the Hips
Sports that emphasize one side of the body, like golf, compound hip problems by creating imbalances between one side of the pelvis and the other. Doing asanas that relax and open those areas produces the opposite effect.
