    Yoga for Pregnancy

It seemed risky to focus an entire newsletter on yoga and pregnancy, considering that pregnancy may not be a relevant topic in many of your lives. But the letters pour in everyday from women and men asking a broad range of questions about pregnancy--everything from fertility, to modifying poses, to getting back to the mat after giving birth. While we can't respond to every question we get, this week's newsletter, with the help of expert teachers Tim Miller and Sarah Powers, answers the most common questions we've received. To supplement this information, look for the pregnancy guide in the May/June issue of the magazine (available on newsstands April 22nd) for more answers to your pregnancy questions.

If you're not pregnant or not planning to become pregnant, don't be so quick to toss these links aside--after all, we could all use some advice and reminders about how to care for our ever-changing bodies, even if they aren't undergoing the changes of childbirth. As prominent Buddhist scholar Sylvia Boorstein has said to Yoga Journal, "Each moment is new, and you respond to it anew. It is the first time that moment's ever happened." Pregnancy, or other bodily changes like injury, illness, or simply aging, require us to notice this and to respond, both in our practice and in our lives, accordingly.

    Namaste,
    Andrea Ferretti

    In this Issue:

New! Featured Pose: Salabhasana (Locust Pose)
Locust Pose is an effective means for strengthening the back of the torso, legs, and arms in preparation for the deeper, presumably “adult” backbends.

    Upside-Down Mama
Examining the strength of your prepregnancy practice can help determine whether you should do inversions when you're expecting.

    Special Delivery
More and more mothers-to-be are turning to Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa's gentle asana practice to prepare emotionally and physically for labor.

Ask Our Experts: Sarah Powers and Tim Miller

    Yin Yoga and Fertility
"Yin yoga is a wonderful practice for both quieting the active mind and encouraging the prana to consistently flow through the six main meridians in the legs, which are connected to the health of the spleen/pancreas, liver, kidney, urinary bladder, stomach, and gall bladder. A body with balanced chi and healthy organs is of course more likely to become pregnant and sustain a healthy pregnancy."

    Backbending During Pregnancy
"What do you think about backbending during pregnancy? It seems that in the Ashtanga vinyasa tradition, there isn't much taboo against it, yet the opposite seems to be true in the Iyengar tradition."

    Pregnancy Modifications for Experienced Students
"I am six weeks pregnant and a serious yoga student. How should I modify my practice during the first, second, and third trimesters? It seems like all the prenatal yoga information is geared to beginners."

Returning to Yoga After Giving Birth
"I have just had a child and am receiving mixed reports as to when I can go back to my Ashtanga practice, which I was doing regularly right up to giving birth, with modification for my swelling belly. I had a natural birth with no complications."

    ********************************************************* Scent of a Mom
For pregnancy, labor, and beyond, four soothing aromatherapeutic oils lend comfort and balance.

    Sthira Sukham Asanam
The Yoga Sutra say that sitting in meditation should be steady and comfortable, but many of us have the opposite experience. Creating space in the body through hatha yoga can bring some ease to your seated meditation.

    The Trouble with Touch
In yoga, adjustments can be a powerful form of exploration or a negative force that causes insult and injury. Can students and teachers create healthy boundaries?
