Something Lost or Something Gained?
As more Westerners continue to embrace yoga, how has it transformed
the ancient practice? Does yoga have the power to become a movement
and a vehicle for positive change in the world? Or is it just another
fitness fad that most Americans will eventually discard? Will it become
commodified like so many other things in Western culture? I find myself
asking these questions all the time as I see the range of ways that yoga
is now present in my everyday life. I smile instinctively as my neigbhors
walk by me in the morning with their yoga mats, ready for class at a
local studio. A few hours later I may feel a knot in my stomach as I see
yoga being used in an advertisement for a bank or a car company.
With the coming of the July 4th holiday, we reflect on yoga's coming to
America and examine the state of yoga today. Tell us what you think about yoga
in the West by responding to our Talk mailbox below.
Namaste,
Andrea Ferretti

Talk To Us
Yoga teachers and scholars from Georg Feurstein to
Max Strom have called the increased participation and interest in
yoga a "revolution." Do you think this is true? Can yoga be used
as a vehicle to create change in the United States and the world?
What have we lost and gained as we integrate yoga into our modern life and culture?
Tell us what you think at mailto:talk@yogajournal.com.
SANSKRIT TRIVIA: ABHINIVESHA ("will to live"), one of the five
causes of afflication (klesha), according to classical yoga. Ultimately,
abhinivesha springs from spiritual ignorance (avidya), whereby a person
wrongly identifies with the body and becomes subject to the survival
instinct.
