Great for runners: excellent stretch both prior to running and in regular practice.

Avoid this position if suffering from osteoporosis, risk of pressure fractures. Avoid any forward bend for same reason, vertebral fractures.

The English for the pose may be misleading but according to Iyengar, Intense side (or flank) stretch is what it means (Light on Yoga, p 70-2

This englsh for this posture is incorrect. This is not an intense side stretch , it is a forward bend (perhaps it has been mixed up with parsVAKonasana - intense side stretch)
