Like many yoga poses, this is a combination pose, meaning that it hits several muscle groups at once. I did this for only 5 minutes (off and on) once, and the next day, my arms were sore, my abs were sore, my lats were sore, and even my obliques were sore. If you want to build muscle, do this pose. Use props if you need to. There is no shame in that. I used a fitness ball for stuff with my back injury.

I just started a Ashtanga class where this pose is used several times throughout the class. I am frustrated that I cannot perfom this. It seems like my arms are too short to get any area between my rear and the floor. I see in the picture above that block could be used, and I think this would help me, but it wasn't offered in the class I took. My instructor basically told me that my core was weak and that with time I could do it. I'm a little intimitdated by this.

Margaret, this is actually a core pose, not an arm balance. Curling and lifting your torso off the floor comes from strong core work. I have short arms, so I have to use blocks. You might try that modification. If you still can't get up, prep with some strong core poses.

I had to do a project on yoga for my physical education class and this webside gave me everything that I needed. This was a great help. Thanks! :)

Thank you for this pose.
My yoga instructor called it The Pendulum, but scale pose is also good. I will practice tomorrow with the blocks. For some reason I can do crane and not this one well. To me crane is more of a balance pose where this is more muscular arms must have pose.

this is first time I am visiting this web site. After seeing Tolasana pose I am thinking that how easy it is to misguide people about something that they do not know? So those of you who really want to learn this pose, please do some research before practicing this pose. One thing I can tell you that THIS IS NOT TOLASANA FOR SURE!!!!

I've just seen Nicholas Cage Perform this pose in the movie Con Air.Greatly tones the abdominal muscles.

I love this pose! It's one of my favorites. It looks alot harder than what it really is. My students are amazed when they can get into this pose.

I really enjoy trying the different. I am 77 and can do most poses. My legs are long and salute to the sun is hard for me especially bringing my foot forward. I'll keep trying.
