Dr R K S Rathore

To me it appears the common posture for defication in Indian tradition. it has nothing to do with garland. Mala in Hindi used for feacus.

This is indeed the squatting version of Namaskarasana. Thank you for correcting this. It's wonderful for correcting imbalances after intense twists.

Mala - In the Hatha Yoga Pradikipa is mentioned to be a garland of flowers offered to a guru. And therefore would link with BKS. Ive found no mention of this in texts as an individual posture other than in its Namaskara Origin.

This is actually the yogic Squat pose - namaskarasana.
in malasana, the arms go around the legs to bind in the back. Please verify from the Bihar School of yoga text books or BKS Iyengar book to make the correction. Thank you

mala - means impurity/toxin. i read this on another yoga page. this makes sense.

@Deja - if you look at light on yoga BKS has the arms going around and catching the hands behind - like a garland.

i tell my students to firmly press the elbows into the fleshy part of the inner knee area to find more opening in the spine....also...bring the hands in prayer down towards the feet...also helps to find more opening!

Beginners can be balance on tip toes !
