I agree with j. All these "women should not do xyz" in yoga just seem discriminatory. I really like this pose and I'm sort of an "advanced" beginner. And frankly, since not one person has been able to give me a reason why I should not do certain things while I am menstruating that makes any amount of sense...guess what? I just do what feels reasonable at the time. It is difficult to breathe in this one, but that is part of the benefit of the pose. The breath can really help massage the internal organs in Mayurasana.

as far as women not doing this pose, in India women weren't supposed to do yoga at all anyway. Whatever. I can do this posture fine and I am a woman. Guess what- I can EVEN do this pose when I am menstruating and I suffer no harm!

i think anonymous meant exactly what was said. men and women do have different centers of gravity.

It's likely because women have a different center of gravity to men so it may be more difficult for them?

I think this would tone the lower back more than it would the abdomen, I guess that's what back torso means. 'Legs' is a little vague: the glutes and hamstrings hold them in place like that. I think you could also do this with bend knees in which case it's more glutes.

I am supposing women would need to rely more on the strap, as they may need to use their lats/pecs more to pull the elbows in and push their breasts to gether if they happen to be very large.
