Marge, osteoporosis makes any form of exercise dangerous. I am not sure if it needs to be avoided entirely, but if you are scared of how to rise, rather than a slight bend, why not just totally bend the knees and tip forward so your hands are on the floor and use them to rise? Maybe have a chair nearby?

Padahastasana is the pose where your hands are under your feet.
Pada:feet / Hasta: hand

Margaret. Essex

Avoid this position if suffering from osteoporosis, or are at risk of OP. Possible fractures to vertebra when rising. It does not matter if the knees are bent or straight, position is not safe for osteoporosis sufferers.

im a 46 yr old male in can't touch my toes, can yoga help me out.

Romaine,

The aim of this pose is to lengthen the spine and at the same time stretch out your hamstrings; touching the floor isn't important and you'll get a much deeper stretch if you focus on lengthening (spine and legs). Use a block to rest on or use the wall as suggested in 'beginner tips' until your hamstrings begin to lengthen. Aim to bring your belly to your thighs rather than your hands to the ground!

Julie

Why do you recommend not rolling the spine up when coming out of Uttanasan?

Sam

Romaine,

Check out BKS Iyengar, Light on Yoga. For uttansana you should keep the legs straight and you may use a block or chair for support.
