Hi, I need some help ! I am teaching a group from my son's elementary school k-2 and they arrive right when school is over and are like wild animals wanting to run around. I've tried to really keep the class fun and creative, but they just won't listen and i spend most of my time asking them to get back on their mats, to stop rolling around with the neighbor, . I allow them to run around a bit before I start to get a bit of the pent up energy out, but it doesn't seem to help. I don't want to punish them. But how can I get them attentive and involved ? Help ?? Any suggestions would be appreciated. email me directly @amwsanfran@yahoo.com

I teach both typical and special needs populations kids yoga. The children have taught me to remember the find the joys in the small steps in holding a pose and allow the creativity to come out, even if it was not planned. If you give the children a voice, they will show you and tell you how to make the class interesting, as you guide them into the next pose or activity.

Katie - it can be super fun to teach kids, even with a wide age range like you have. Try getting the older kids to demonstrate the poses and the younger kids will follow along. A good prop like yoga card or the frog yoga alphabet can help get their interest at the beginning. Good luck.
