I burst out laughing when I read this article. What? Someone like Ana Forrest doesn't know where her mula bandha is??? I can't believe it! So for all these years, she's been contracting her anus? Ah, Ah, Ah! That's hilarious. How much is a TTC with this lady?

I completely agree with Catherine :)

A great article and practical detailed instruction for exploring mula bandha.

As a practitioner I've had to experiment quite a bit with the root engagement. There's so much information out there on this topic and very often misleading - such as the instruction to contract the anal sphincter muscle which is ashwini mudra and not mula bandha. If this technique (ashwini mudra) is what is being taught as mula bandha, then of course, we will be prone to having elimination problems - as it exacerbates conditions such as constipation.

To engage mula bandha is to contract the transversus abdominis (particularly the lower region on either side of the pubis) which naturally affects the perineal floor (subtly drawing it upward) creating a powerful sense of pelvic/core integration without strain or apanic congestion. As another aside: when the bandha is engaged properly, there does not appear to be contraindication with regard to the menses - however this is for each yogini to decide for themselves.

It is a disservice to avoid teaching this bandha since asanas and pranayama are deeply experienced through its engagement.
