it is very important how the word is pronounced
the sound creates vibrations within your body which can be of relevant frequency and note only if the word is pronuonced correctly

as when aum is used for meditation , there is a particular manner in pronouncing it

In the case of this mantra, you are right, pronunciation is not important as this mantra is about directing our awareness to the big picture, the cosmic tide of the breath and its expression of divinty. But in regards nearly any other mantra pronuciation is very important meaning of the mantra is least important. The sounds of the sanskrit language impact the subtle energies of the spine and pronunciation will have significant impact on your success and results of its practice. Seek a competent teacher when practicing any other mantra.

When it comes to mantras, pronunciation matters little. Any set of words or word or syllable works in any spoken fashion. For those of you so stuck on how a word should sounds you are not really getting the meaning of a mantra. It is only there to help focus and calm your monkey mind.

the spelling is often "ham", but the pronunciation is "hum" as far as I understand...
