I really feel as though this really helped, my periods really get me down :(
I have wondered for a long time to what the ban on inversions was related. I tried them (mostly downward dog) and found that they seemed to actually stop my menstrual flow -- sometimes. However, I also find that they relieve so many of the symptoms associated with menstruation that I would rather risk missing the flow than avoiding the improved feeling and mood produced by the inversions. (I've always been very irregular re my menstrual flow, so there may be no connection at all between the flow and the inversions.) Thanks for the article, it is good to see that it's really a personal decision.
I have personally never experienced any ill effects from being inverted while menstruating. I agree with the article and think that you should try poses and see what is best for your practice.
Geeta Iyengar does not recommend doing inversions during the period, but only before and after.
I too have just tried inversions for the first time during my period and I have yet to fully recover. I'm cranky, exhausted and have abnormal joint pain, which I never have experienced before. I have felt like I am in a fog and I'm convinced it is due to practicing when I should have been resting.
I just did a lot of inversions during the day 1 of my period yesterday and I feel like shit. My joints ache, my back, I have a headache and I have a unique dizziness. This is my first time doing inversions during menustration and I will probably never do it again.
It's true that everyone is different and has to listen to their own body.

Does BKS reccomend it during your period or between your period?
And do the inversions relief apana all the time. Or is it possibly different when you are menstrating that it may releif when you aren't and increase when you are because apana is so high then?
