My teacher, Maharishi Mahesh yogi, always said,
"The criterion of the growth of spirtuality is how much I have grown in peace, in power, in wisdom,,, in creativity, in happiness,These are the criteria of real growth of spirtuality."
Loved this article.
Great article but I just wanted to comment on the idea of integrating yoga's spiritual goals into western life.
In 2002 I bought a book of daily yoga meditations by Rolf Gates. I was drawn to the title by its similarity to the AA Daily Meditation series.
Rolf Gates had in fact based the book on his own AA experience and this really spoke to me as an extension of spiritual principles I was already committed to.
Although I had been practicing hatha yoga for 20 yrs at that point, and sobriety for almost as long, I had not understood the yogic nature of surrender and self-study.
Admittedly, surrender is not a popular western concept (!) but still there are thousands of addicted and/or obsessed people who "will go to any length" to find a solution to their troubles.
