Thank you very much Julie for this very good description of how to stretch the calves. I have super stiff calves muscles and desperately trying to find ways to stretch my calves which I hope will make me a better runner and hiker. I was surprised to read "Don't ever try to stretch your calves while hanging your heels off a step." This is widely promoted everywhere this is the first time I read about this. Thank you and if you have time, please let me have more information about this.

I have this exact problem i think. My calves are very tight and most stretches don't fix it. They are so tight that my running stride is awkward and unhealthy and I am not even able to squat without getting on my toes. If i continue to do the downward dog stretch will my problems be resolved?

my foot is really hurting in the morning but getting better as the day goes on. and on the other leg my calf is tight what do i do?


I have been waking up crippled with pain in my ankles which loosens as the days go by. My massage therapists (one my brother) say this is tight calves and I have had a couple of extremely painful massages on the calves and ankles which have helped get a start on loosening the calves. I have been stretching every day and I can feel it starting to work--less pain and more bounce. I was really grateful to read this article. Thank you!

I've always been a toe walker and now my calf muscles are so tight that walking in heels is almost imposible.I read your article and found it very interesting. however since i do not do any yoga,i am unfamiliar with the poses mentioned such as the plank pose, the downward dog,uttanasan etc. Would it be possible to get a more detailed explanation of these poses? my email address is thanks a lot
