  • Why Practice Padma Mudra?

    Why Practice Padma Mudra?

Padma means lotus and this mudra resembles a lotus flower blossoming open. Padma Mudra helps you to remember the very essence of your innermost Self is love, radiance, and bliss. The goddess Lakshmi is the shakti of inner spiritual abundance, grace, wealth, good fortune, love, and all auspiciousness. Just as Lakshmi was born out of the churning of the ocean over thousands of years, soul beauty emerges over time, with patience and practice. I’m not talking about the superficial beauty that seduces the ego but rather what I call the “deep soul glow” of the Self. Practice this mudra whenever you feel contracted in your heart energy and you wish to remember your innate beauty and wholeness.

  • Step 2

    Step 2

Slowly unfurl your hands like a lotus flower blossoming open. Keep the base of the hands together, along with the thumbs and little fingers. Allow the index, middle, and ring fingers to gently open. I also call this mudra “chalice mudra,” because the hands form the shape of a chalice. And in Lakshmi practices, we drink from the chalice of the heart.

From Lotus Mudra, spin the hands away from your heart, down to the earth and back toward your heart to return to the original position. Turn the hands around in a graceful and circular way with some part of the hands always in contact. Feel into your heart space and continue to spin the mudra as long as you like. Chant Lakshmi’s bija mantra Shrim to amplify the power of the practice. Set an intention for harmony within your heart and for your practices to benefit all beings.

  • Lotus Pose with Lotus Mudra

    Lotus Pose with Lotus Mudra

Take a comfortable meditation seat, adding a blanket or bolster for height if your low back rounds or you feel tight in the hips or knees. If Padmasana (Lotus Pose) is easily available to you, bring your right foot in first followed by your left. Otherwise, sit in Siddhasana (Adept’s Pose) with your right heel near your perineum and your left heel in front of your right ankle. Bring your hands softly to Anjali Mudra in front of the heart center. Slowly unfurl your hands into Padma Mudra. Gently gaze down into the opening of your hands and chant Lakshmi’s bija mantra Shrim 3 times; first with gratitude for your life, second with gratitude for your loved ones, and third with gratitude for the challenges in life that help you grow. Repeat Padmasana or Siddhasana with Padma Mudra on your second side, bringing the left foot in first.
