“Time management” is such a buzzword. The desire to attain good time management is so enticing that yoga teachers and studio owners often spend hundreds of dollars and many hours learning software programs aimed at saving them time. We try different email management programs, online schedulers, and calendar systems — you name it, we’ve tried it. And, although these technologies do help, we may still have a sense of time passing quicker than our ability to accomplish everything on our to-do lists.

How To Get It All Done

All entrepreneurs will ask this question at some point: How do I get everything I want to get done done and still maintain my sanity, good health, and relationships?

Or, from the other side of the same coin: How do I earn the money I would love to make but still enjoy the freedom in my life that enables me to continue with my yoga practice, spiritual work, and personal path?

From whatever angle we approach this time and money freedom issue, the first and most critical step for us is to learn to discern between time management and task management.

Task Management 101

It seems so simple, yet when we move from trying to manage time to actually managing tasks, the power is back on our hands. This is how we create a healthy relationship with time. Task management is: eliminating, editing, ordering, and adding tasks according to a given plan, on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis.

Identify your goals

So the first step of course is making a plan. As the saying goes, “for a sailor that has no destination in mind, there are no favorable winds.” A lot of us get tossed around by tasks because we are unclear about where we are headed. We have things on our to-do lists that keep us busy, but the point is never to be busy. Instead we want to check in with our lists and ask ourselves: Is what I am doing today taking me closer to where I ultimately want to end up in life?

Eliminate tasks that aren’t helping you move toward them

Once you answer the question in step 1, you can begin eliminating tasks that are not producing real results in your life. Yes, the word we used is eliminate. The most crucial step is in getting rid of things on our to-do list that are simply not helping our business or life move forward in a meaningful way.

The concept behind this is called ‘sacrifice,’ or, letting go of tasks, habits, and even relationships that are not helping us move forward and replacing them with tasks, habits, and relationships that do. And it takes discipline to do that, but the result is time spent on tasks that matter.
