The harsh reality most yoga teachers face is that it’s very tough to make a living by teaching public yoga classes alone. Teacher Sherell Tucker asked:

Can you give me some examples of other revenue streams of income as an independent yoga instructor without a studio?

Yoga Journal’s Business of Yoga Experts’ Advice:

First to answer the question, you must ask yourself some other simple—but not necessarily easy—questions:

What do you love to create for yourself? What would you love your business to look like?

For some teachers, their ideal work life would involve traveling around the world teaching at different studios and events and leading workshops and teacher trainings. For others, teaching privates locally and filling up their own signature programs like workshops and webinars is more in line with what they want.

The Funnel Approach to Alternative Revenue Streams

Once you nail your answer down and fall in love with your own unique career vision, you are ready to start creating a business and marketing funnel that works. For teachers, what that means is that, at the top of this funnel you are looking at expanding your reach and building awareness, which you can accomplish by teaching in public classes, events, conferences, and other out-of-the-box places, as examples. You want the top of the funnel to be about connecting with a high volume of new students. At the very bottom of the funnel is where your signature programs, one-on-ones, retreats, teacher trainings come in. That’s where the students who have met you and stayed connected with you will make the investment to participate in your other programs. Your financial freedom is at the bottom of this funnel.

Don’t forget that your unique gifts, all of the skills you have developed and used successfully in your life, are of great value in building your own signature programs!
