Steve Jobs Studied Yoga

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs will long be remembered as an innovator whose vision changed the way we interact with the world through technology.┬áBut what many people don’t know is that Jobs was guided by an intense interest in spirituality and yoga.

Jobs, whose life is the focus of a new movie, was so passionate about his quest for self-realization that when he passed away in 2011, guests at his memorial service were given a copy of the classic book Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda, said SalesForce.com CEO Marc Benioff in a recent interview with CNET.com. Jobs first read Yogananda’s book as a teenager and then read it again and again throughout his lifetime for inspiration, said Benioff, who considered Jobs a mentor. The book, which is required reading in many yoga teacher training programs, touts the practice of self-realization and Kriya Yoga meditation.

Jobs also traveled to India to gain spiritual insights when he was young. “He had the incredible realization that his intuition was his greatest gift, and he needed to look at the world from the inside out,” Benioff said. “Steve was a very spiritual person. In many ways he was a guru.”
