Instagram has become a popular hub for yogis looking to show off their most impressive poses, a practice that some people feel conflicts with the purpose of the yoga. But no matter how you feel about yoga selfies, the hugely popular social channel is catching on in the yoga community, and prominent teachers are embracing it as a tool to both motivate students and share their own yoga inspiration in creative ways.
The #HowcanIhelp challenge by New York yoga teacher Tara Stiles, founder of Strala Yoga, asks people to post photos of themselves, not in fancy poses, but doing something that helps others. The two most inspired acts of kindness will be rewarded with a hat hand-knitted by Stiles. She explains that the challenge is about being of service to one another. “It’s a cornerstone of what we teach with Strala in our trainings: ‘How can I help?’ over ‘What can I prove?’” she told YJ. “I want to reward people for doing good in the world.”
The #fallinlovewithyoga challenge spearheaded by Kathryn Budig and Amy Ippoliti gives participants a theme to express through asana, such as “Share” or “Happy Heart.” And to up the inspiration factor, participants also share a positive affirmation each day. On Day 9 of the 10-day challenge, more than 9,500 posts have been uploaded with the hashtag #fallinlovewithyoga.
