Samadhi is actually not enlightenment .. it is a family of mental states all involving dramatically increased quiescence and stability of the mind.
Satori is another word for enlightenment.
Excellent article. Thank you.
Beautifully explained! Thank you.
For me it was 'Trixie Belden'!
Thankyou for your beautifullly explained article.
Maybe I can actually meditate.
WOW!!! You have just enlightened me with this article. It has answered many a question that I have thought about! Thank-you kindly! Beautiful peice.
Once again, people without transcendent experience try to bring samadhi down to an everyday feel good pedestrian level. Why not just say the samadhi is a state reached by Avatars and mystics, primarily by grace, and is described by those who have experienced it and its description cannot be made by those who have not.
Judith, you express well the idea of samadhi as direct perception unfiltered by personal history, culture, and the like. I would like to disagree, though, with your claim that mantra meditation is difficult. In several methods of mantra-based meditation, such as Neelakantha Meditation, we use the nature of the mind - to seek more joy and expansion - in the process. Rather than concentrating, we make use of this natural tendency of the mind to gently bring us beyond the filters and history of which you speak. Then we experience samadhi in a natural way. Then, we become able to experience greater degrees of this state while fully engaged in activity.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom, decades of hard work and the inspiring intangibles you articulate so well in written form.......
