Yoga + skiing is a match in heaven. :-) Thanks for a very inspiring post!
Though the strengthening pre-season asanas are not quite the same as the after-ski ones when the lower body is exhausted (then I do more leg stretches, inversions, and arm balances, to save the legs).
Try yoga before hitting the slopes. Go to the January 10th post on my weekly blog--- www.yogawithachristiantwist.blogspot.com---that targets the Achilles tendons to enhance forward lean. plf
Yoga after skiing has been a practice of mine for several years. This year I bought extra mats and have been introducing apres ski yoga to my ski friends, most of whom were not familiar with yoga and are now converts. We usually do the 30 min. Baron Baptiste dvd. My knees have appreciated my yoga practice. Keep spreading the word !
Dont forget to place youre weight evenly across
the bottoms of feet and spread toes inside the boots, think of "rooting"
I live in the Adirondack Park in upstate New York. This has been a very cold winter but we have plenty of snow. Our area is well known for its multitude of outdoor activities. On Fridays I teach yoga to adults in the morning and alpine skiing to children (as part of their school PE curriculum) in the afternoon. Yoga and skiing are natural cross-training partners. One definitely benefits the other in terms of increased range of movement and elevated energy levels.
Does anyone have any suggestions of what the feet are doing when skiing? With knees bent and weight forward, I seem to lose contact with my feet...
Yoga is a must for skiers wishing to make a more complete and crisp connection between the mind and the body. Not only does it help physically with muscle balance/ imbalance and injury prevention but it trains us to understand and be more aware of exactly what we are doing and how it effects what happens beneath our feet.
Try SportsYoga Ski with Billy Asad for a great yoga video for ski conditioning. It has a few levels of workout and is really terrific. My husband likes it too and he has never done yoga before, while I've been practicing yoga for 10 years.
I have been a life time skier and have recently turned 40. I recently decided to add yoga to my ski regimen and the results ranged from easier buckling of my ski boots to feeling like I am 20 again on the black diamonds. Thank you to www.bigskyyogaretreats.com for helping with this combination!
