A Call for Unity

Will the world end today? Is it just the end of the Mayan calendar? Judgment day? Simply the shortest day of the year and nature's signal that the days will begin to now grow longer?

Opinions vary on the matter, but yogis around the world believe that today is not so much the end of anything as it is the beginning of a new era. So, conscious thinkers and feelers—including yoga teachers, religious leaders, peacemakers, meditators, and spiritual seekers of all cultures and tribes—have come together to UNIFY. Influenced by the meditation Flash Mob Movement, which we wrote about back in October, in which organize gatherings in public places to meditate, UNIFY is an even larger movement that is intended to unite people all over the world through globally synchronized ceremonies and meditation gatherings.

Part of UNIFY’s immediate mission, naturally, has been to be a dashboard for all of the solstice events of today and this week. UNIFY also designated two moments of silent contemplation for today. The first is at 11:11 GMT, and that is a worldwide moment of peace in honor of the solstice. In addition, UNIFY also declared that 8pm GMT (which is noon PST and 3pm EST) will be a moment of worldwide unification. To celebrate, Flash Mob Meditation events are taking place all across the globe, from Cape Town to Kauai, Taiwan to New York City, and Nairobi to Montreal. In Jerusalem, varied religious leaders from the area will join together in prayer at sacred sites in the Old City.

Other solstice events and gatherings will be happening all day today and tomorrow across the globe, and many of these can be found on the UNIFY site. UNIFY will also host a unique global live-stream webcast with a site called Birth2012 , highlighting all of the major events and solstice festivals that are happening in far flung locales like Teotihuacan, Mt. Shasta, and Antarctica.

As of now, more than 300,000 people who have joined the movement, says yoga teacher and UNIFY spokesperson Lea Saslav, with more than 780 meditation, music, yoga and spiritual groups involved. Celebrities like Ashton Kutcher and Beyonce have been tweeting about it, and MC Yogi even made a video to promote the movement.

Want to participate? There may be a Flash Meditation Mob in your city today. Go to the UNIFY site, and look at the map of events, or go the Facebook page and see what's happening. If there are no events near you, simply enjoy a moment of silence during one of the two gathering times, and send positive energy out into the world.

“This is the beginning of a whole new creation,” says Saslav, who adds that new events for globally synchronized meditation and prayer will be tracked and coordinated on the UNIFY site going forward. “Unify is the beginning of this beautiful umbrella that is going to go far in the future unifying everything and everyone, from all walks of life, all over the planet.”
