The 80-20 Rule

What happens when you aim to reach your goals by cutting all guilty pleasures—think chocolate, coffee, gossip—from your life? Typically, a lot of annoyance and very little success.

Balance doesn't have anything to do with perfection; it's quite the opposite. How about setting your sights on a more realistic goal instead? Spend 80 percent, or the majority, of your time taking steps—yoga practice, food, interactions, commitments—that will move you toward your fab and fit goals. The rest? It can be whatever you want, no guilt or strings attached.

  • 80 percent whole foods, 20 percent peanut M&Ms
  • 80 percent seltzer and lemon, 20 percent Pinot Grigio
  • 80 percent exercise, 20 percent hot baths and long naps
  • 80 percent working hard toward my dreams, 20 percent surfing the web and lying on the couch watching Game of Thrones
