Yoga Journal is joining forces with #YOGAforNEPAL to raise much-needed funds for the victims of last month’s devastating earthquake. You can help, too: Encourage friends and local studios to participate, and donate your money, time, and practice.
Yoga Journal is proud to partner with Naropa University and other members of the yoga community for #YOGAforNEPAL, a series of yoga and meditation classes and online fundraising events on May 12th to raise critically needed funds for earthquake victims in Nepal.
“On Tuesday, May 12th, yoga enthusiasts are asked to donate their practice, share the message with social networks, and encourage friends and local studios to participate. We believe we can mobilize thousands of people to contribute money, their time, and their intentions to rebuilding Nepal,” says Nataraja Kallio, director of the Yoga Studies program at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado.
#YOGAforNEPAL is a broad coalition of Boulder-based companies, studios, and individuals who have come together to mobilize relief efforts on behalf of the nearly one-half million Nepalese who were critically injured or displaced from their homes and livelihoods as a result of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Nepal on April 25th. More than 7,000 Nepalese have died.
“As yoga teachers, we have a close connection to a community seeking extraordinary consciousness, and it’s important to me to create and participate in opportunities for us to harness that consciousness toward the greater good,” says Gina Caputo, one of several yoga teachers who will lead yoga and guided meditation classes at Naropa University on May 12th (admission is free and open to the general public, with a suggested tax-deductible contribution of $20; click here for more information). “The Nepalese have historically been such great shepherds of people from all over in explorations of both the inner and outer landscapes and all their majesty. It only makes sense that we, in return, do what we can in their time of dire need.” Richard Freeman is also confirmed to teach at the Naropa event.
Colorado-based Yoga Pod will also host a special #YogaforNepal class for everyone who wants to dedicate their practice and donate to this important cause. “The strength and energy of people coming together to breathe, move, and meditate is powerful beyond words,” says Nicole and Gerry Wienholt, Yoga Pod owners and franchise founders. “Nepal has such a historical and spiritual connection to yoga, so it’s appropriate that we bring the yoga community together to offer our support and compassion for the people of Nepal, at such a crucial time of need.”
