Have you ever experienced a moment when a series of abrupt changes took place, seemingly at once? Or a time when you suddenly had fresh insights, a new outlook on your challenges, or a rapid influx of energy?

These are the moments when all the work you’ve been doing (on a job, relationship, project, or goal) suddenly comes to fruition, or you finally let go of what isn’t serving you in order to welcome something new. This is when you find success or redirection in multiple areas of your life, simultaneously.

In astrology, these transformational moments are most common during eclipse season. Eclipse seasons come twice a year, when the Sun is near the lunar north and south nodes. Eclipses occur in cycles that span the course of about 18 months, and represent major shifts in a particular area of your personal life and a particular energy of the zodiac.

On the night of December 4, there will be a total solar eclipse in Sagittarius. This eclipse is significant for two reasons: First, it’s a total solar eclipse, where the sun will be entirely blocked in some geographic regions; it’s also the final eclipse in a cycle of eclipses on the Gemini/Sagittarius axis, finishing a cycle that began in June 2020.

The astrological significance of the solar eclipse

Eclipses are portal moments that allow for the birth of the unexpected. With this eclipse being the final eclipse in a cycle, it’s calling for the birth of a new way of being and the release of the outdated and heavy patterns that are better left in the past.

In Sagittarius, this solar eclipse challenges you to release authoritarian, deductive, or piecemeal ways of viewing truth, letting go of the stories in your head that you believed were true because of old, false premises, or because they’re what someone else told you is true. Instead, Sagittarius encourages you to open up to the highest levels of truth, particularly those truths that come from the space of inner knowing.

Sagittarius acknowledges the mystery of what is yet to be explored, while accepting that anything you focus your attention on will reveal its true nature. Everyone who practices yoga or meditation eventually discovers this: sitting on a cushion becomes deep meditation; a series of physical postures becomes a doorway to inner exploration. This is the gift of Sagittarius.

This solar eclipse brings with it some extra energy, as well. Energetic connections to Mercury, Neptune, Saturn, and Chiron create a complex moment when healing old patterns and wounds is highly probable, as long as you’re willing to see what happened clearly and set appropriate boundaries moving forward. (Hint: these boundaries are both for the external world and your inner mental-emotional plane.)

The main takeaway of this solar eclipse is that whatever you’ve been working on for the last 18 months is ready to see its final moment of change. Get ready to step into the truth of your inner knowing and allow your heart to guide you. Relax, release, and know that your truth is always on your side.

7 poses to flow through the solar eclipse

Utkatasana (Chair Pose)

Why this pose works for the solar eclipse: Sagittarius rules the hips and thighs, so starting your practice activating these areas is a key to allowing the moving energy of Sagittarius to flow throughout your body.

How to: Start in Tadasana, with your feet together or hip-width apart. Inhale and raise your arms overhead, keeping them parallel, palms facing inward. Exhale and bend your knees so your thighs are as parallel to the floor as possible, pushing your hips back. Keep your inner thighs parallel to each other as you press down into your heels. Pull your shoulders away from your ears, firming your shoulder blades against your back. Stay here for 30 seconds to a minute, and then release back to Tadasana.

Virabhadrasana I (Warrior I)

Why this pose works for the solar eclipse: This posture continues to engage the hips and thighs, while creating an active opening. It also begins to use the Gemini-ruled arms, which oppose Sagittarius in this eclipse, and are the silent accompaniment to this energy.

How to: From Tadasana, step your left leg back, grounding your left foot into the mat at a 45-degree angle. Ensure your right foot is aligned with your left heel, then bend your right knee until your thigh is approximately parallel to the floor. Inhale the arms overhead, hands shoulder-distance apart and palms facing each other. Make sure your right knee is directly over your ankle, and your left leg is firmly pressing into the ground. Hold here for 5–10 breaths. Return to Tadasana and repeat on the other side.

Garudasana (Eagle Pose)

Why this pose works for the solar eclipse: This pose calls in the full energy of the Gemini-Sagittarius continuum of the zodiac. If you can do this posture and balance here, you’re well on your way to integrating the eclipse energy into your physical form.

How to: From Tadasana, bend both knees. Lift your right foot and slowly wrap your right thigh over your left. If it’s accessible to you, curl your right foot behind your left and hook it there. Reach both arms out in front of you and cross your right arm under your left. Continue wrapping your arms around each other until you can press your palms together. Raise your elbows to shoulder height. Stay here for 5 deep breaths. Return to Tadasana, and repeat on the other side.

Ardha Chandra Chapasana (Crescent Half Moon Pose)

Why this pose works for the solar eclipse: Solar eclipses are important moments to honor the power of the moon. This variation of Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose) does just that, opening up the Sagittarius-related second chakra, and engaging the Sagittarius-ruled thighs. Plus, it will give you some much-needed balance during these shifting energies.

How to: Step your left leg back and slightly turn your body to face the left. Raise your arms, coming into Warrior II. From here, move into Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose). Tilt your body to the right, lowering your right arm toward the ground. Simultaneously, raise your left foot behind you. Keep your standing leg engaged and slowly lift your left arm up.

You can stay here, or if you’d like to move into Crescent Half Moon, bring your left knee toward your chest so you can grab the top of your foot with your left hand. Hold firmly and move your knee back behind you. To fully open the pose, kick your right foot into your hand, as if you were trying to straighten your leg. Be sure your left thigh stays in line with your torso. Hold here for 3–5 breaths, then release. Repeat on the other side.

Akarna Dhanurasana (Archer Pose)

Why this pose works for the solar eclipse: This is the quintessential Sagittarius pose, as Sagittarius is the archer! It opens up and engages the second chakra, and helps you set your aim so that your eclipse intentions hit their mark.

How to: Begin in Dandasana (Staff Pose). Inhale, lifting your arms overhead and bend forward to hook your thumbs around your big toes. Lift through your torso and press your toes into your fingers and your legs into the floor. Broaden your chest by spreading your collarbones and look forward. 

You can remain here, or move into Archer Pose by pulling your right foot up and back, so your foot is near your ear. Open your torso slightly to the right side, keeping your right knee and elbow parallel to the ground. Keep your gaze looking forward, and hold for 15–30 seconds. Release and repeat on the opposite side.

Ananda Balasana (Happy Baby Pose)

Why this pose works for the solar eclipse: This posture helps you access the joy that comes with new beginnings and opens up the Sagittarius-ruled hips.

How to: Move to your back. With an exhale, bend your knees into your belly. Inhale, gripping the outsides of your feet with your hands. If that’s not available to you, you can loop a strap around each foot. Open your knees slightly wider than your torso and gently push your feet up into your hands. Straighten one leg and then the other. Remain here for 15 seconds or more, and then release. 

Savasana (Corpse Pose)

Why this pose works for the solar eclipse: Savasana is important in any practice, but taking the time to rest during an eclipse is especially important.

How to: Stretch your legs out in front of you and your arms overhead. Feel the lengthening in your body before releasing your arms by your side and allowing your legs to fully relax. Relax the muscles in your face and neck and turn your gaze inward, seeking your truth. Stay here as long as you’d like.
